Introducing the Temporary Work visa

Introducing the Temporary Work visa

The Temporary Work visa route is intended for non-UK nationals entering the UK for a short time to work or complete training under a variety of circumstances, such as for diplomats, athletes, staff of charity organisations, and entertainers. In most cases, applicants require a job offer from a licensed sponsor in the UK.

Successful applicants can stay in the United Kingdom for 12 months if doing work experience and 24 months if doing research, training, or an Overseas Government Language Programme.

Categories included under the Temporary Work visa:

  • Creative Worker
  • Charity Worker
  • Religious Worker
  • Government Authorised Exchange
  • International Agreement
  • Seasonal Worker
  • Youth mobility scheme

What successful applicants can do after being granted a Temporary Work visa:

  • Study
  • Work in the job described in their certificate of sponsorship
  • Do a second job for up to 20 hours per week
  • Switch into another visa category
  • Bring their partner and children with them, if eligible

Temporary Work visa holders cannot take a permanent job or receive public funds.

Temporary Work visa requirements

Applicants will require a certificate of sponsorship issued by a licensed sponsor. A sponsor can be an organisation running an approved exchange scheme, a higher education institution, a government department, or an agency.

Applicants will also be required to demonstrate access to sufficient funds to support themselves: usually this is £1,270, but some categories of applicants are exempt.

Temporary Work visa application process and fees

Candidates must apply for this visa online from outside the United Kingdom. Inside the United Kingdom, applicants can only extend their visa or switch into this visa category from a different one.

Candidates can apply for this visa up to 3 months before the day they are due to start work in the UK. A decision is usually made within 3 weeks for applications made outside the UK and within 8 weeks for applications made inside the UK.

Regardless of whether the visa candidate is applying inside or outside the UK, the application fee is £244.
