Introducing the Start-Up visa route

Introducing the Start-Up visa route

The Start-Up visa is an immigration route designed by the UK government to attract top business talent. The Start-Up visa route is a flexible immigration option for international candidates who wish to set up an innovative business in the United Kingdom. Before applying, visa candidates will need to have their business idea evaluated by an appropriate endorsing body.

The visa is valid for 2 years without the possibility of extension. However, if the applicant is still continuously involved in the business, and the business is active, trading, and sustainable as endorsed by the relevant body, the applicant may be able to switch to the UK innovator visa.

Start-up visa requirements

All candidates need to have their business idea appraised to a UK endorsing body to confirm that the project is original, innovative, and viable. Further, all candidates must be at least 18 years old, have sufficient English language ability, and be able to prove that they have enough personal savings to support themselves and any family members in the UK.

Start-up visa application

Candidates may apply either inside or outside the United Kingdom. Candidates will need to provide an ‘endorsement letter’ showing that a UK endorsing body has assessed their business idea and found it original, innovative, and viable. Applicants will also need to provide:

  • a valid passport or other document showing identity and nationality of the applicant
  • bank statements showing the applicant had at least £1,270 in savings in their bank account for 28 consecutive days prior to application
  • proof that they meet the English language requirement
  • tuberculosis test results if appropriate

Start-up visa processing time and fees

A decision can usually be expected within 3 weeks if the applicant is outside the UK and within 8 weeks if the applicant is inside the UK. Priority service may be available.

Fees are £363 for the main applicant and £363 for each family member if applying from outside the UK; for applications made within the UK, the fees are £493 for the main applicant and £493 for each family member.
